Swannanoa is a census-designated place in eastern Buncombe County with 5,021 people at the 2020 census, up from 4,576 in 2010. It lies between Asheville and Black Mountain, with Interstate 40 passing through its main commercial area.

Named for the river

The community is named for the Swannanoa River, which flows through the settlement. Homes near the river can have high groundwater and damp crawl spaces, which shorten the life of pipes, water heaters and anything stored low.

A mill community

The area was home to the former Beacon Blanket Mill, and the Alexander Inn was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. As with many mill communities, some homes date back many decades and have been repaired and extended over time. Older houses near the river may have original cast iron drains and galvanized supply pipe, as well as water heaters in crawl spaces where water can reach them.
