Woodfin is a town in central Buncombe County bordering the north side of Asheville, with 7,936 people at the 2020 census. It was incorporated in 1971, though the community dates back to at least the mid-1800s.

Mill villages

Woodfin's history is closely tied to manufacturing, and neighborhoods such as Martel Village and Company Bottom still carry names from that era. The town is named for Nicholas Washington Woodfin, a lawyer and statesman of early North Carolina, and it is the only municipality named Woodfin in the United States. When manufacturing declined in the 1970s and 1980s, the town declined too, before newcomers brought fresh growth.
