Where two rivers meet
Asheville sits in the Blue Ridge Mountains where the Swannanoa River joins the French Broad. It is the largest city in Western North Carolina, with 94,589 people at the 2020 census. In September 2024 Hurricane Helene brought record flooding to both rivers and badly damaged the municipal water system. Many homes still have plumbing that was never checked after the water went down. See flood recovery plumbing.
Mountain weather
Thanks to its elevation, Asheville is cooler than the rest of the Southeast's Piedmont. Summers are mild, with only a handful of 90°F days most years, and January averages about 37°F. Valley afternoons can feel gentle while ridge-top homes drop well below freezing overnight, so pipes in crawl spaces and exterior walls still need protecting. Our freeze prep guide explains how.

Common questions
Do Asheville plumbers handle after-hours calls?
Many do. The plumber who contacts you will tell you how soon they can come and confirm any after-hours charges first.
Should I close my crawl space vents in winter?
Many people close or cover them during the coldest months to keep pipes warmer, then open them again in spring. Ask the plumber what suits your house.
Why do my drains gurgle?
Gurgling often means air is being pulled through a trap because the line is partly blocked or a vent is obstructed.
Can a flooded water heater be saved?
Sometimes, but often not. A plumber can inspect it and tell you whether repair is safe.
Who owns the sewer line?
Usually the homeowner, from the house to the public main. Your local utility can confirm.
