Montreat is a small town in eastern Buncombe County with 901 people at the 2020 census. It lies in the valley of Flat Creek, surrounded by mountains on three sides, with North Carolina Highway 9 as its only road access.

A mountain retreat

The town was incorporated in 1967, but its story begins in 1897, when Congregationalist minister John Collins formed the Mountain Retreat Association with funding from candy maker John S. Huyler. The name Montreat combines "mountain" and "retreat". In 1907 control of the association passed to the Presbyterian Church, and Montreat has hosted religious conferences for many years. It is also home to Montreat College. Conference buildings and cottages that see heavy use in some seasons and little in others need plumbing that's shut down and started up with care.
