Emergency Plumber in Asheville, NC

Plumbing emergencies rarely happen at a good time. What you do in the first few minutes, before help arrives, makes the biggest difference to the damage.

Stop the flow

Find the main valve. In many Asheville homes it's in the crawl space or basement where the line comes in, or in a utility room near the water heater. Close it fully, then open a faucet at the lowest point in the house so water drains out of the pipes rather than out of the break.

Homes on a well

If your home is on a private well, switching off the breaker for the well pump stops it from refilling the pressure tank and pushing more water through the leak. Then close the valve after the pressure tank to isolate the house.

Stay safe around power

Keep out of water that is near the electrical panel, the water heater or outlets. If you can reach the breaker box from a dry spot, switch off power to the affected area. If not, leave the room and contact the power company.

Backups from drains

Sewage coming up through a tub or floor drain means the line to the street or the septic tank is blocked. Stop running water anywhere in the house until it's cleared. Each flush or load of laundry makes the backup worse.

Hillside houses

On sloped lots, water from a leak can run downhill into a lower level or crawl space you rarely visit. After any big leak, check the lowest parts of the house, and tell the plumber if water has pooled somewhere hard to reach.

What to send

Where the water is, whether it's clean water or sewage, whether the main or well pump is off, and how long it ran. Send a request and a plumber will get in touch.

Frequently asked questions

Do Asheville plumbers handle after-hours calls?
Many do. The plumber who contacts you will tell you how soon they can come and confirm any after-hours charges first.
Should I turn off the water heater?
If the water will be off for a while, yes. Set a gas heater to pilot or switch off the breaker for an electric one.
