Born after a flood

In 1916 a substantial flood in Asheville damaged the Biltmore Estate, and the Biltmore Company sold the affected land to reduce its upkeep and tax burden. The town of Biltmore Forest was chartered on that land in 1923, with the first houses built on White Oak Road. In 1929 Asheville annexed part of the town, but the state legislature reversed it in 1935. A town that began because of a flood is a reminder of how much water shapes this valley.
